    Meriting Industrial Cluster

The SPEDU Region Tourism Cluster Corridor includes the Tuli Block and Mashatu, the Selebi Phikwe and the Tswapong Hills. SPEDU region is a destination that provides an opportunity for various tourism products that are untapped in Botswana as the area has been earmarked as special economic zone for business investment. Located in the region that provides vast unique landscapes, road networks, waterbodies, heritage and culture to name few, it enables strongest tourism development prospects and stable environment for tourism investors. Also the construction of the Platjan bridge and the refurbishment of the Selebi Phikwe airport will de-congest the busy Martin Drift Border Post thus contributing to business and tourism travel efficiency amongst other benefits.

With a current tourism business composition of Hotels; Guesthouses, Bed & Breakfast focused mainly in main town Selebi Phikwe and villages, Lodges and Camps in Tuli Block and Mashatu the area has been exposed to over 200 000 thousand annual international arrivals, estimated at 10% of annual arrivals in the country. Due to the ample villages (52) in the region overnight domestic tourism is also significant and continue to show growth as tourists visit the destination for MICE, Events, Visit friends and Relatives, Religion and others. Over the next years, Botswana’s tourism growth rate is forecasted at 4% as indicated from Tourism Satellite Account 2016 report findings.

SPEDU as a destination, provide investment opportunities in tourism that will be unique and diversified from our traditional (wildlife based) tourism practices in Botswana as there are opportunities in, Dam Tourism (Letsibogo, Thune and Dikgatlhong), Agro-Tourism, Tour Operators and Travel Agencies, MICE, Gastronomy Tourism, Photographic Tourism, Digital Tourism, Heritage and Cultural Tourism, Health Tourism and Sports Tourism.
